Boxing Gloves
Last week I posted that my wife Belinda had bought some boxing gloves and joined me on the Fight Yourself Fit challenge. I’m happy to say she’s still hanging in there! She’s made it through the ‘body shock’ of the first week but quickly recovered, and is well into the second.
Hand on heart I wondered how she would get on. She’s watched as the program tested me to the limit, particularly in the early days (apparently I was quite often ‘overtired and irritable’) – I can’t remember any of that, only some impatience at how long it takes her to take a blog photo of me toiling away at the punch bag!
Let’s get one thing clear, like me, Belinda is an unlikely candidate for boxing training. We are both not naturally the sporty types or even people who would go to a gym, let alone a boxing or martial arts class.
However, she has had the benefit of seeing first hand, my journey through the workouts – going from zero to …. well being able to throw some boxing combinations with a degree of competence! And more significantly has seen my appearance change greatly over the past 2 months. I wouldn’t be so bold to say I’ve inspired her (heaven forbid) but I guess seeing the proof before your own eyes is the ultimate motivator. It was the same for me with Mark G.
It’s been essential to have the workout schedule – ticking off the days and trying new routines. Corney’s demonstrations and shouts of encouragements (even if it’s just a ‘Come on!’) have undoubtedly helped me get to this point. I’ve also had the bonus of doing the program with Steve, even though we are separated by 650 miles! (encouragement, motivation and a hint of friendly competition go a long way too). It’s made it easier than going completely alone.
I’ll end with this quote from Belinda’s after her first boxing workout – Day 1 – Technique 1 (The Basics).
Belinda – “That’s the toughest thing I’ve ever done. Jeez, those burpee jump things?! Now I know how you’ve felt.”
Me – “You wait until Power & Speed 4”.
Belinda – “I’m really, really, tired. You’ll have to make dinner tonight”.
Cheers, John.
BTW. The pink gloves aren’t mine.
