Part of today’s Power and Speed Workout 1 – the ‘Sixer Crunches’ – this involves lying underneath the punch bag, then crunching up and hitting the bottom of the bag with 6 straight punches, before lower back down again. Believe me the ‘lying down’ part here isn’t a welcome rest – it’s all about working those abs, and you quickly know about it.
I’ve been tested to the limits this week – both physically and mentally. The extra skipping has pushed on further. The heavier John a few weeks ago – started with 10 sets of 100 jumps (going as fast and hard as possible), last week it was up to 200 jumps, today it was 250. Add in the 500 more during the actual boxing workout – that’s means quite a lot of skipping – well for me anyway.
But my greatest achievement this week has been outside the gym. I’m on a ‘temporary’ self-imposed alcohol ban. It’s been a big challenge, as I like a beer or two, and was made all the more difficult when without thinking my wife came home with a six pack of beer (force of habit). “We can just save them until you’ve finished the entire program” she says. “What?! You don’t buy beers to save them for a rainy day, you drink them until there’s no more left!”.
The offending beers were hidden away at the back of the kitchen cupboard, and although there were occasions when I was severely tempted – the beers have remained unopened. I’m quite proud of myself – it’s taken just as much motivation as the burpee jumps.
A good lesson in self discipline and strengthening willpower!
